Attorney General William Tong has responded to Eversource’s decision to appeal the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) ruling that blocked the sale of Aquarion Company. The proposed transaction would have transferred Aquarion, a water utility, to a new nonprofit entity. According to state officials, this change was expected to result in significantly higher household bills and reduced public oversight over water rates and consumer protections.

Attorney General Tong had previously called on PURA to reject the deal. In his statement, he said: “Eversource is desperate to offload Aquarion after not getting the massive rate hike they wanted. They need to take no for an answer—no one wants this deal. PURA was right to reject this costly loser, and we are prepared to vigorously defend this decision on appeal.”

The case now moves forward as Eversource seeks legal recourse following PURA’s denial of their proposed sale.
