Danbury resident sentenced to prison for trafficking fentanyl

A Danbury man has been sentenced to 30 months in prison and one year of supervised release for trafficking fentanyl, according to an announcement from David X. Sullivan, United States Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Jairo Abreu, 33, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Stefan R. Underhill in Bridgeport. Law enforcement officials said that Abreu was involved in bringing fentanyl into Hartford. He was arrested on state charges on October 17, 2023. After his arrest, a search of his residence in Danbury led to the discovery of approximately 2.8 kilograms of fentanyl and about 2,000 wax sleeves containing fentanyl.

Abreu was later arrested on federal charges on February 23, 2024. He pleaded guilty on April 25, 2024.

Currently released on a $100,000 bond, Abreu is scheduled to report to prison on January 15.

The investigation involved the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Gang Task Force and several local police departments: Hartford, East Hartford, Manchester, New Britain, West Hartford, as well as the Connecticut State Police and Department of Correction.

Assistant U.S. Attorneys Sean P. Mahard and Reed Durham prosecuted the case through the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) Program.
